Mount Karisimbi, towering at 4,507 meters, is the highest volcano in the Virunga range and one of Africa’s most challenging yet rewarding hikes. Located within Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, this two-day adventure takes hikers through a variety of ecosystems, from dense rainforests and bamboo zones to alpine meadows and volcanic rock formations.

The journey begins with a morning briefing at the park headquarters in Kinigi before transferring to the trailhead near Mount Bisoke. The first day involves a demanding 6-hour trek to an altitude of 3,700 meters, where hikers set up camp for the night. The second day starts early, with a push to the summit before sunrise, offering incredible panoramic views of the Virunga Mountains, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The descent follows the same route, completing the adventure back at the base.

This trek requires good physical fitness and preparation for varying weather conditions, but the reward of conquering Rwanda’s highest peak makes it an unforgettable experience.
