Before booking a gorilla trekking tour, travelers should know the following:

  1. Minimum Age Limit: The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 16 years. Children below this age are not permitted on the trek for safety and conservation reasons.
  2. Physical Fitness: Gorilla trekking can involve steep, uneven terrain and long walks. While the trek varies in difficulty, it's important to be in good physical condition. If not one can request porters who will assist you on the trek for an extra fee
  3. Permits: Gorilla trekking requires a permit, which should be booked in advance. These permits are limited and often sell out quickly.
  4. What to Wear: Wear sturdy hiking boots, long pants, and long sleeves to protect against thorny bushes and insects. Don’t forget gloves, a hat, and a rain jacket
  5. Guidelines: Respect the gorillas' space—maintain a distance of at least 7 meters and avoid making loud noises. There will be a briefing before the trek to explain the dos and don'ts.
  6. Weather: Expect unpredictable weather in the mountains, ranging from rain to sunshine. Be prepared for all conditions.
  7. Health and Safety: Travelers should be in good health and free from contagious diseases like colds, as gorillas can catch human illnesses.
  8. Support the Conservation: The fees you pay for the trekking permit contribute directly to gorilla conservation efforts and the local community.
